Emergency Food Helps out

Mike* a homelessman, entered the shelter in the middle of night very hungry after not eating for a full day. Preferring to sleep outside; all he requested was food to supress his hunger. Thanks to the emergency food fund we were able to supply Mike with a nutritional meal after serving hours.

Emergency Shelter Management Services

Eric came to the shelter in October 2009 and began to search for employment with the assistance of case management and the job developer.  He gained employment in January 2010 full time as a cook in the Milford Mall. He began to save his pay checks and started to search for affordable housing.  He did find an apartment in New Haven. He requested assistance in paying the security deposit.  In February 2010, Neighbor-to- Neighbor funds assisted him in paying his security deposit. He continues to work and had maintained his housing on his own ever since.

Rental Assistance Program Providing Inspiration

Greetings!!

How exciting it is when a plan comes together.  During the past couple of months, we have been able to assist three clients in making the transition from residing in our shelter to their own apartments within the City of New Haven.

Motivated by the 'possibility' of receiving assistance from our agency, through the generous funding from this grant, three previously homeless men have located great apartments in the community, moved into those apartments and are working to maintain stability.

Providing Hope for the Homeless

While the full benefit of the funding has yet to be realized and evidenced by the stories of those that have been able to tap into our Rental Assistance Program, we are encouraged by the positive response of our residents to the project, and the incentive it is giving them to take extra steps to work with their case manager to identify and secure suitable housing.  More to come in our next posting...
