Closing the Revolving Door of Homelessness

Cindy* and her 7 year old daughter faced homelessness for far too long. They endeavored to find stable housing or a friend or relative who’d let them stay with them for a while. Cindy struggled with a chronic illness and a lack of stable employment. These barriers, combined with a lack of affordable housing resulted in Cindy coming to New Haven Home Recovery’s CareWays Shelter.

New Haven Home Recovery provided more than just a safe place for Cindy and her daughter, it provided her with the services she desperately needed. She received counseling services and her daughter participated in our SEARCH (Services, Education & Activities Reaching Children who are Homeless) program to help maintain her grades while staying at the shelter. Working with her case managers at CareWays, Cindy applied for and was accepted to a supportive housing program. She was also able to take advantage of the Furniture Co-Op to get furnishings for her new apartment so that she didn’t have to face moving into empty rooms. After over a year of going between homeless shelters and staying with willing family and friends, Cindy finally has a place to call home. Thanks to the funding received through the Neighbor to Neighbor grant, New Haven Home Recovery works to empower homeless women in our shelters so that they can close the door to homelessness.
