Electricity Payment Helps Single Father Shine
It was the first time in his life that Gary found himself with a utility shutoff notice. A single father of a small daughter, Gary prided himself in his ability to work and maintain an apartment and healthy environment for his child. But when he fell behind on his electric bill, due to reduced hours in the late winter/early spring, he knew that he needed just a little help. His hours were being increased beginning in June and looking over his finances, he was sure he would be able to handle all his obligations once the larger paychecks began. But those checks would not come soon enough to prevent his electricity from being shut off.
Gary and a JFS social worker worked together to examine his income, his obligations and responsibilities. Gary already applied for and was receiving food stamps which helped balance his monthly buget and allowed him to meet his rent and other bills, up until now. He also was given resources for additional help if he needed it, such as the JFS Food Assistance Program (during times of income lapse or food insecurity). JFS helped Gary with his past due electric bill to ensure that he could offer a safe and healthy environment for himself and his child. By avoiding the shut off of his lights, Gary continues to shine in the eyes of his daughter.
