Fighting Hunger in New Haven, One Meal at a Time

Did you know that according to End Hunger CT, in our state alone, 8.8% (122,000) of households, many of them with children, are food insecure (based on latest USDA figures).
• 45,000 (3.2%) people in Connecticut suffer from very low food insecurity at some point during the year (based on latest USDA figures)
• One out of five children, 102,000 youngsters, under the age of twelve, are hungry, or at risk of hunger.

These statistics are alarming to say in the least.  Look around you.  Could a family member, a neighbor, a friend, the person in front of you at the post office, or a co-worker be experienceing hard times?  Are they one of the many residents in this state who currently wonder and worry whether they will be able to feed their family?  Do they have to choose between paying the rent or mortgage, putting gas in their car to go to work or putting food on the table?

Jewish Family Service of New Haven, Inc. is just one of the many food pantries in New Haven county fighting hunger one meal at a time.

Since the economic downturn in 2008-2009,  JFS has witnessed first hand the drastic increase in the requests for food assistance.  Even before the inception of the Neighbor 2 Neighbor Lifeline Grants, the requests for emergency food and supplemental food on a regular basis was a steady occurence.  On average, JFS provides more than 7,000 lbs. monthly to those in need.  Last year alone, more than 212 new families walked through the door at JFS and requested emergency food assistance.  Thanks to the N2N Lifeline Grant, JFS was able to accommodate all of these requests and distributed an additional 20,000 lbs. of non-perishable food, in and above, the nearly 70,000 lbs. of food distributed on a regular basis.  This was only made possible through the generous N2N grant, our wonderful donors, the many food drives and donations throughout New Haven to benefit Jewish Family Service and our wonderful volunteers who help operate the pantry.

For more than 100 years, JFS has been providing for those in need and we will continue to help fight hunger, one meal at a time.
