Helping Keep a Roof Over One's head

When Betty came to JFS she was troubled about keeping a roof over her head, as family illness and other personal circumstances put her behind on her rent for the first time in her life.  Not knowing where to turn, Betty had read an article in the New Haven Register about Neighbor 2 Neighbor Grants and contacted JFS to see if they could give her advice and a referral to necessary resources.

Betty met with a social worker and discussed her situation.  Through the intake, the JFS social worker was able to help Betty with budgeting her current obligations and they worked together to develop a plan just in case another family crisis happens in the future.  For instance, certain non-essential expenses were reduced and a plan was made so that each family member could contribute to help keep the family in their home at this time.  When the family is able to get back on their feet, some of these expenses could once again be added, but it was stressed that this might not be in the near future.  JFS also provided the deliquent rent to Betty so she could be assured to be able to stay in her current apartment and keep her family intact.
