Lucy, a teenage parent who was a senior in high school, had a 2 year-old son. Lucy’s home situation was extremely unstable and she and her son moved multiple times at the beginning of Lucy’s senior year. When Lucy and her son became homeless during the school year, Student Parenting and Family Services (SPFS) helped her get into a shelter program. SPFS’ Education Advisor helped Lucy develop a plan for when she finished high school. Lucy wanted to go to college; SPFS helped her apply to Gateway Community College. Because she had no family support, Lucy needed reliable child care for her son so she could go to college classes.

SPFS helped her find a subsidized child care center, but Lucy could not enroll her son because she had lost his birth certificate during her multiple moves. SPFS was able to pay for Lucy’s son’s birth certficate, so Lucy could register her son for the subsidized child care center. Lucy graduated from high school and is excited about attending college in the fall. The subsidized child care center is holding a spot for her son.
