Homeless For Years

After being homeless for years, Daryl*was thrilled to move into his own apartment. This was not accomplished overnight. Daryl lived in shelters and then worked his way through transitional housing programs until he was ready to get an apartment.   Daryl was very proud of himself and was extremely disappointed when he almost became homeless again. Daryl’s only source of income is his disability check and his case manager at AIDS Project New Haven worked with him very closely to help him budget his finances. Even with this support Daryl was not able to keep up with his portion of the rent and was too embarrassed to share this with his case manager. Daryl explained that he was paralyzed with fear that he would “be put out again” and be on the streets. Daryl was not eligible for other housing programs and without the housing assistance from the Neighbor 2 Neighbor Program he would again be homeless. Thanks to the United Way of Greater New Haven and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven Daryl has another chance.
