Large Family Finds Pantry A Blessing
When one parent loses a job it is hard enough. But when the remaining "breadwinner" is laid off, the result is not only devastating but frightening. That is the situation Jewish Family Services pantry staff encountered when they met a family of 8 (including an infant) recently. Although they were in the process of applying for food stamps and WIC, and awaiting their income tax return, they needed immediate assistance to feed their children.
With limited unemployment benefits, the majority of their money was going towards their rent, utilities and other basic needs. With the help of the JFS Food Pantry, they were able to obtain non-perishable foods to help stretch their budget. In addition, the family was given a one-time grocery store certificate to supplement the canned food they received from the pantry. With the certificate, the family was able to purchase meats and fresh produce.
The family reported that they are now receiving food stamps and WIC and that they are grateful for the help they received during their time of fear and uncertainty. Their income tax return came back and they are making ends meet with food stamps, WIC and even part time employment.
