Mishkan Israel experiences the blessing of feeding the hungry

This month, the volunteers from Mishkan Israel’s Life Is Delicious group not only cooked dinner for the guests of Columbus House’s overflow shelter, but also had a group of volunteers who served the meal that had been prepared that day. Many of these, including the children, had never been to a shelter before. One volunteer relayed the experience.

“When you first walk in, it can feel overwhelming. Our group set up and got in line behind the tables, ready to dish out the meal that had just been prepared --barbecued chicken, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, coleslaw and potato salad, and chocolate cake – all made from scratch. As the each shelter guest came through the line, you would look at them in the face. Very quickly, you come to appreciate how much concern they have for their own well being. These are intelligent engaging human beings, each with unique attributes and gifts, who need and deserve as much love as everyone else. After a while, it feels like you’re serving family.

“The guests were so appreciative, they blessed us over and over. They kept coming back for seconds and even thirds. There were guys falling asleep because their stomachs were full and they were content. At that moment, you realize you are truly making a difference in others’ lives. This is why we do what we do. We truly are blessed.”
