One Time Insurance Payment Helps Prevent Unemployment

Jacob arrived at the JFS office an hour and a half (two bus transfers) after leaving his house.   If it were three weeks ago, the trip would have only taken 20 minutes in his car.  Unfortunately, due to unexpected and costly car repairs, Jacob let his car insurance lapse, and did not want to take chances driving with no insurance.  His lack of transportation during the time his car was in the shop and especially after his insurance lapsed, made jacob have to use the taxi and bus to get to and from work.  This and the car repair were unexpected expenses and didn't allow him to save up for his insurance.  Public transportation was also making him arrive late to work and his position was now in jepoardy.
Jacob came to JFS in hopes of receiving a one time emergency payment to reinstate his insurance - thus reducing the expenses of transportation and also allowing him to arrive to work on time.  After meeting with a JFS social worker, Jacob learned that once his insurance was reinstated, he would have to budget $42 weekly to be able to pay his monthly car insurance on time and avoid the repeating of his current situation.  Jacob knew he could do this as he was able to make all his current financial obligations before he ran into car repairs.  The social worker also worked with Jacob to guide him on how to put aside a little extra money each week as a "rainy day" fund in case unexpected expenses happened again.
