Hands that Feed the Soul

Some new volunteers from Congregation Mishkan Israel’s Life Is Delicious cooking group got the chance to serve at Columbus House’s overflow shelter. As always, there was a robust cooking session prior to heading to the shelter. When we got there, we saw people who many folks had gotten to know through Abraham’s Tent. There were lots of smiles in recognition, and some hugs. One guy announced “we’re going to eat real good tonight!” All of the men that we served were so very appreciative. There was more than enough to eat and

Mishkan Israel experiences the blessing of feeding the hungry

This month, the volunteers from Mishkan Israel’s Life Is Delicious group not only cooked dinner for the guests of Columbus House’s overflow shelter, but also had a group of volunteers who served the meal that had been prepared that day. Many of these, including the children, had never been to a shelter before. One volunteer relayed the experience.

Congregation Mishkan Israel Nourishes Shelter Residents

Congregation Mishkan Israel's cooking group, Life is Delicious, cooks once a month for those staying at the overflow shelter.  Immediately after making the food, it is delivered hot, just in time for dinner.  After cooking this Sunday, we called the shelter hours after we had delivered the food and spoke to Greg to see how things had worked out. He said that they were still handing out food and it was delicious. When asked how we could make it better, he kept saying "This food is so delicious, I don't know how you can make it any better."

Congregation Mishkan Israel Cooks for Columbus House Overflow Homeless Shelter

We dropped off the food at the overflow homeless shelter and one of the staff asked us to address all the recipients who were lined up waiting for dinner.  We told them “We are from Congregation Mishkan Israel in Hamden and we have a great meal for you this evening….made with the same kind of love as when we cook for our families.  We hope you’ll enjoy it.  It was an honor to give you a meal.”  They all applauded us and people stepped forward to shake our hands and to say “God Bless You.”  We left humbled and deeply touched.
